The International Society of Typographic Design

This publication was created for the International Society of Typographic Designers 2020 competition. The brief was to create an engaging typographic experience that would make the reader fall in love with mathematics.

Through careful typesetting of the dialogue of the 1998 movie Pi, the publication demonstrates a visual struggle between order and chaos, and simultaneously showcases the beauty of numbers. Drawing on inspiration from both modernist and postmodern design, the book typographically evokes the transition from the domain of simple mathematics to the unhinged ramblings of a mad man.

I put the final book together by hand using the Flag Book technique created by Hedi Kyle. The book has many architectural structures that showcase the beauty of the mathematical patterns in nature. A spread 1.7 meters in length combines all of the individual pages to reveal the mathematical constant — Pi.
